Torpedoed E8 Then/Now

The Southern Appalachia Railroad Museum continues collecting some interesting engines. This week I stumbled upon, of all things, an EMD E8 out at the K-25 plant. Not just any E8 but one equipped with roof mounted air tanks (torpedoes). If you recall one of Phil Brooks article photos included a Southern version of this unit at the head of the passenger train.

I Googled around the web and did find the source of this engine based on the remnant paint scheme. This unit was owned by New Jersey Transit. The sad thing is the current condition. Note the then (1981-ish) and now photos. But looking on the bright side of things, it will eventually be restored.
